Joe Utterback was born on August 1, 1944, in Greenville, South Carolina. He grew up in a musical family, with his mother playing the piano and his father playing the guitar. Utterback began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Utterback's early musical education was primarily focused on classical music. He studied with several local piano teachers and eventually attended Furman University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. After completing his undergraduate studies, Utterback went on to earn a Master of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Michigan. Throughout his education, Utterback was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and genres. He was particularly drawn to jazz and began incorporating elements of the genre into his classical compositions. This fusion of styles would become a hallmark of Utterback's work as a composer. Utterback's career as a composer began in earnest in the 1970s. He began writing music for a variety of ensembles, including jazz bands, orchestras, and chamber groups. His compositions were well-received and he quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative composer. One of Utterback's most notable works from this period is his "Concerto for Jazz Piano and Orchestra." The piece was commissioned by the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 1978. The concerto features a solo piano part that blends elements of jazz and classical music, accompanied by a full orchestra. The piece was a critical and commercial success and helped establish Utterback as a major figure in the world of contemporary classical music. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Utterback continued to write music for a variety of ensembles. He also began teaching at Furman University, where he had previously studied as an undergraduate. Utterback's teaching career was just as successful as his composing career, and he quickly became one of the most respected music educators in the region. In addition to his work as a composer and educator, Utterback was also an accomplished performer. He frequently performed his own compositions, as well as works by other composers, in solo recitals and with various ensembles. One of Utterback's most notable works from the 2000s is his "Sonata for Violin and Piano." The piece was commissioned by the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2003. The sonata features a virtuosic violin part accompanied by a complex and harmonically rich piano part. The piece was praised for its technical difficulty and emotional depth. Utterback continued to write music and teach at Furman University until his retirement in 2010. He remains an important figure in the world of contemporary classical music and his compositions continue to be performed and recorded by ensembles around the world. In addition to his work as a composer and educator, Utterback was also a dedicated philanthropist. He was involved in a number of charitable organizations throughout his life and was particularly passionate about supporting music education programs for underprivileged children. Joe Utterback passed away on December 20, 2020, at the age of 76. His legacy as a composer, educator, and philanthropist continues to inspire musicians and music lovers around the world.
