Apel Les Mestres was a renowned classical music composer who was born on January 15, 1923, in Barcelona, Spain. He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer. From a young age, Apel showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Apel's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his father and later studied at the Barcelona Conservatory of Music. He also studied composition with the renowned composer Joaquín Rodrigo. In 1940, Apel's family moved to Paris, where he continued his studies at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. He studied under the tutelage of Nadia Boulanger, a renowned music teacher who had taught many famous composers, including Aaron Copland and Philip Glass. During his time in Paris, Apel was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and began to develop his own unique style. He was particularly influenced by the works of Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. In 1945, Apel returned to Barcelona and began his career as a composer. He quickly gained recognition for his innovative compositions, which blended traditional Spanish music with modernist techniques. His works were characterized by their use of complex rhythms, unconventional harmonies, and colorful orchestration. One of Apel's early works, the Suite Española, was premiered in 1947 and received critical acclaim. The suite was a collection of six pieces for piano that showcased Apel's mastery of Spanish folk music. The suite was later arranged for orchestra and became one of Apel's most popular works. In the 1950s, Apel began to experiment with electronic music. He was one of the first composers in Spain to use electronic instruments in his compositions. His electronic works, such as the Electroacoustic Suite, were groundbreaking and helped to establish him as a pioneer in the field of electronic music. Apel's most famous work is his opera, La Celestina, which was premiered in 1969. The opera is based on the Spanish novel of the same name and tells the story of a love affair between a young man and an older woman. The opera was a critical and commercial success and is considered one of the greatest Spanish operas of the 20th century. Throughout his career, Apel composed music for a wide range of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo instruments. His works were performed by some of the world's leading musicians, including the pianist Alicia de Larrocha and the conductor Zubin Mehta. Apel Les Mestres was a prolific composer who wrote over 200 works in his lifetime. His music was characterized by its originality, innovation, and passion. He was a true pioneer in the field of Spanish classical music and helped to establish Spain as a major player in the world of classical music. Apel Les Mestres passed away on December 10, 1985, at the age of 62. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.
