Ville Matvejeff is a Finnish conductor, composer, and pianist who has made a name for himself in the classical music world. Born on May 28, 1986, in Helsinki, Finland, Matvejeff grew up in a family of musicians. His mother was a pianist, and his father was a cellist, so it was only natural that he would develop an interest in music at a young age. Matvejeff began playing the piano when he was just four years old, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in public. He studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he earned a degree in piano performance. He also studied conducting with Jorma Panula, one of the most renowned conducting teachers in the world. Matvejeff's career as a conductor began in 2009 when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra in Finland. He held this position until 2013, during which time he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. In 2011, he was also appointed as the principal conductor of the Jyväskylä Sinfonia, a position he held until 2016. In addition to his work as a conductor, Matvejeff is also an accomplished composer. He has written music for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, choirs, and chamber groups. His compositions have been performed by many of the world's leading musicians and ensembles, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tapiola Sinfonietta, and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Matvejeff's career as a pianist has also been impressive. He has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also given recitals in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Festival Hall in London, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. One of the highlights of Matvejeff's career as a conductor was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016. This was a significant achievement for Matvejeff, as the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the oldest and most respected orchestras in Finland. During his tenure with the orchestra, Matvejeff led them in many successful performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Sibelius's Kullervo Symphony. Matvejeff has also been recognized for his work as a conductor and composer. In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious Jorma Panula Prize, which is given to the most promising young conductor in Finland. In 2012, he was awarded the Teosto Prize, which is given to the best new composition by a Finnish composer. He has also been nominated for the Finnish Grammy Award, the Emma Award, for his work as a composer. In addition to his work in Finland, Matvejeff has also conducted and performed in many other countries around the world. He has worked with orchestras in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan. He has also been a guest conductor at many of the world's leading music festivals, including the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Salzburg Festival. Matvejeff's career as a musician has been marked by his versatility and his ability to excel in many different roles.
