Period:BaroqueSounds Baroque is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing Baroque music. The ensemble was founded in 2010 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for the music of the Baroque era. The founding members of the ensemble were violinist Julia Wedman, cellist Kate Bennett Haynes, and harpsichordist Sara-Anne Churchill. Julia Wedman is a highly respected violinist who has performed with many of the world's leading Baroque ensembles, including Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and the Academy of Ancient Music. Kate Bennett Haynes is a cellist who has performed with many of Canada's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Sara-Anne Churchill is a harpsichordist who has performed with many of Canada's leading Baroque ensembles, including Les Voix Baroques and Ensemble Caprice. The ensemble's name, Sounds Baroque, reflects their commitment to performing music from the Baroque era. The Baroque era, which lasted from approximately 1600 to 1750, was a time of great musical innovation and experimentation. Baroque music is characterized by its ornate melodies, complex harmonies, and elaborate instrumentation. Since its founding, Sounds Baroque has become one of Canada's leading Baroque ensembles. The ensemble has performed at many of Canada's leading concert halls, including the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and Koerner Hall in Toronto. They have also performed at many international festivals, including the Boston Early Music Festival and the Festival de Musique Baroque de Lamèque. One of the highlights of Sounds Baroque's career was their performance at the 2012 Boston Early Music Festival. The festival is one of the world's leading Baroque music festivals, and Sounds Baroque was one of only a handful of Canadian ensembles invited to perform. The ensemble's performance was highly praised by critics, who noted their "impeccable technique" and "deep understanding of the music." Sounds Baroque has also received numerous awards and accolades for their performances. In 2013, the ensemble was awarded the Prix Opus for Best Early Music Concert of the Year by the Conseil québécois de la musique. The award recognized their performance of Handel's Messiah, which was described as "a triumph of Baroque style and interpretation." In addition to their performances, Sounds Baroque is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and they have also developed a program for schools that introduces students to the music of the Baroque era. Sounds Baroque's commitment to excellence and their passion for the music of the Baroque era has made them one of Canada's leading classical music ensembles. Their performances are characterized by their technical precision, their deep understanding of the music, and their ability to bring the music of the Baroque era to life for modern audiences.More....
