François Roussel, also known as Francesco Rosselli, was a French-Italian composer of the Baroque era. He was born in 1630 in Paris, France, to a family of musicians. His father, Jean Roussel, was a lutenist and composer, and his mother, Isabella Rosselli, was a singer. François grew up in a musical environment and showed an early talent for music. At the age of 14, François was sent to study music in Italy, where he studied with some of the leading composers of the time, including Giacomo Carissimi and Arcangelo Corelli. He also studied the violin and the harpsichord, and became proficient in both instruments. During his time in Italy, François adopted the Italian version of his name, Francesco Rosselli. In 1650, François returned to France and began his career as a composer. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented composer and was appointed as the court composer to Louis XIV. He composed music for the royal court, including ballets, operas, and chamber music. His music was highly regarded for its elegance, grace, and beauty. One of François' most famous works is his opera, "Les Fêtes de l'Amour et de Bacchus," which was first performed in 1672. The opera was a great success and was performed many times during François' lifetime. It is a pastoral opera, set in a mythical world of gods and nymphs, and features beautiful arias and duets. François also composed a number of chamber music works, including sonatas for violin and harpsichord, and trio sonatas. His chamber music is characterized by its delicate melodies and intricate harmonies. One of his most famous chamber music works is his Sonata in G Major for violin and harpsichord, which is still performed today. In addition to his work as a composer, François was also a respected music teacher. He taught music to members of the royal court, as well as to private students. His teaching style was highly regarded for its emphasis on technique and musical expression. François Roussel died in 1689 in Paris, at the age of 59. He left behind a legacy of beautiful music that continues to be performed and enjoyed today. His music is characterized by its elegance, grace, and beauty, and is a testament to his talent as a composer.
