Jórunn Viðar was a renowned Icelandic composer, pianist, and music educator. She was born on October 29, 1918, in Reykjavik, Iceland, to a family of musicians. Her father, Viðar Þorsteinsson, was a composer and conductor, and her mother, Guðrún Jónsdóttir, was a pianist. Jórunn Viðar grew up in a musical environment and started playing the piano at a young age. Viðar received her early music education from her mother and later studied at the Reykjavik College of Music. She continued her studies in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she studied piano with Victor Schiøler and composition with Knudåge Riisager. She also studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, France. Viðar's compositions are characterized by their lyrical melodies, harmonic richness, and use of Icelandic folk music elements. Her works include orchestral music, chamber music, vocal music, and piano music. Some of her most notable works include the orchestral piece "Hraunslagur," the chamber music piece "Söngur," and the piano piece "Íslensk rhapsódía." Viðar was also a dedicated music educator and taught at the Reykjavik College of Music for many years. She was a mentor to many young musicians and inspired them to pursue careers in music. She was also a pioneer in the field of music therapy and used music to help people with disabilities and mental health issues. Viðar received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to music. In 1975, she was awarded the Order of the Falcon, one of Iceland's highest honors. She was also awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize in 1980 and the Icelandic Music Prize in 1992. Viðar passed away on December 4, 2000, at the age of 82. Her legacy lives on through her music and the many musicians she inspired and mentored throughout her career.
