Role:ComposerPeriod:ContemporaryGenre:OrchestralPhilip Glass is an American composer who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary classical music. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1937, Glass began his musical career as a student at the University of Chicago, where he studied mathematics and philosophy. However, he soon became interested in music and began studying composition with the renowned composer Nadia Boulanger in Paris. After returning to the United States, Glass began to develop his own unique style of music, which was heavily influenced by the minimalist movement that was emerging in the 1960s. His early works, such as "Music in Similar Motion" and "Music in Fifths," were characterized by repetitive patterns and simple harmonic structures, which were intended to create a hypnotic effect on the listener. Over the course of his career, Glass has composed a wide range of works, including operas, symphonies, chamber music, and film scores. Some of his most famous works include the operas "Einstein on the Beach" and "Satyagraha," as well as the film scores for "Koyaanisqatsi" and "The Hours." In addition to his work as a composer, Glass has also been a prominent advocate for the arts and has served as the president of the American Music Center and the chairman of the board of the Tibet House US. He has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the National Medal of Arts and the Praemium Imperiale. Foday Musa Suso is a Gambian musician who is known for his work as a kora player and composer. Born in 1951 in Sarre Hamadi, Gambia, Suso grew up in a family of griots, who are traditional West African musicians and storytellers. He began playing the kora, a 21-stringed harp-lute, at a young age and quickly became known for his virtuosic playing. In the 1970s, Suso moved to the United States, where he began to collaborate with a wide range of musicians, including jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman and composer Philip Glass. He also formed his own group, the Mandingo Griot Society, which blended traditional West African music with elements of jazz and funk. Over the course of his career, Suso has released numerous albums and has collaborated with a wide range of musicians from around the world. He has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Some of Suso's most famous works include the albums "The Dreamtime" and "Jali Kunda: Griots of West Africa and Beyond," as well as his collaborations with Philip Glass on the albums "The Screens" and "Songs from Liquid Days." His music is characterized by its intricate rhythms, complex melodies, and virtuosic kora playing, which have made him one of the most respected musicians in West Africa and beyond.More....
