Ernest Bucalossi was a British composer of Italian descent, born on May 23, 1859, in London, England. He was the son of an Italian musician, who was a member of the orchestra at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. Bucalossi showed an early interest in music and began studying the violin at a young age. He later studied composition with Sir Arthur Sullivan, the famous composer of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Bucalossi began his career as a violinist, playing in various orchestras in London. However, he soon turned his attention to composing, and his first major success came in 1889 with his composition "The Grasshopper's Dance." The piece was an instant hit and became a popular favorite, earning Bucalossi a reputation as a composer of light music.
