Born in 1973 in New York City, Perkins grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a jazz pianist and his mother was a classical pianist, and they both encouraged Perkins to pursue music as a career. Perkins began his musical training on the piano, but soon switched to percussion after discovering his love for the instrument. He studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in percussion performance. After completing his studies, Perkins began performing with various orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He also became a member of the percussion quartet So Percussion, which he co-founded in 1999. So Percussion quickly gained recognition for their innovative performances and collaborations with composers and artists from a variety of genres. They have premiered works by Steve Reich, David Lang, and John Cage, among others, and have performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and the Barbican Centre in London. In addition to his work with So Percussion, Perkins has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician, and has collaborated with a number of other ensembles and artists. He has premiered works by composers such as Julia Wolfe, Michael Gordon, and Bryce Dessner, and has performed with musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw, and the Kronos Quartet. Perkins is also an accomplished composer, and has written works for a variety of ensembles and instruments. His compositions have been performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Bang on a Can All-Stars, among others. One of Perkins' most notable performances was his solo percussion concert at the Lincoln Center in 2012. The concert, titled "Memory/Place," featured a variety of percussion instruments and explored the themes of memory and place through music. The performance received critical acclaim and solidified Perkins' reputation as a virtuosic performer and innovative composer. Perkins has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including a Grammy nomination for his work with So Percussion, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a MacDowell Colony Fellowship. He has also been a guest lecturer and teacher at a number of universities and music schools, including the Yale School of Music and the University of Michigan.
