Adam Scime is a Canadian composer and sound artist who has made a name for himself in the world of contemporary classical music. Born in Toronto in 1982, Scime grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of six and later took up the cello, which he played in various orchestras and ensembles throughout his youth. Scime went on to study music composition at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 2005. He then pursued a Master of Music degree at McGill University in Montreal, where he studied with renowned composer Brian Cherney. During his time at McGill, Scime was awarded the prestigious Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship, which allowed him to focus on his studies and develop his unique compositional style. One of Scime's most notable works is his 2014 composition "Liminal," which was commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and premiered at the New Creations Festival that same year. The piece, which was inspired by the concept of liminality (the state of being in-between or on the threshold), features a large ensemble of musicians and incorporates electronic sounds and effects. It was well-received by audiences and critics alike, with the Toronto Star calling it "a stunning work of art." Scime has also received numerous awards and accolades for his work. In 2012, he was awarded the Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music, which is one of the most prestigious awards for Canadian composers. The prize recognized his composition "Chiasmus," which was described by the jury as "a work of great originality and depth." In 2015, he was awarded the Toronto Emerging Composer Award, which recognizes outstanding emerging composers in the Toronto area. In addition to his work as a composer, Scime is also an accomplished sound artist.
