Nickel Creek is a contemporary bluegrass band that was formed in 1989 in California. The band consists of three members: Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, and Sean Watkins. The band's name was inspired by a song called "Out of the Woods" by Bill Monroe, a famous bluegrass musician. Chris Thile was born on February 20, 1981, in Oceanside, California. He started playing the mandolin at the age of five and was soon recognized as a prodigy. He won the national mandolin championship at the age of 12 and became a member of the band Nickel Creek at the age of 8. Thile has also collaborated with other musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer. Sara Watkins was born on June 8, 1981, in Santa Monica, California. She started playing the fiddle at the age of eight and joined Nickel Creek at the age of 14. Watkins has also released several solo albums and has collaborated with other musicians, including John Mayer and Jackson Browne. Sean Watkins was born on February 18, 1977, in Vista, California. He started playing the guitar at the age of four and joined Nickel Creek at the age of 12. Watkins has also released several solo albums and has collaborated with other musicians, including Fiona Apple and Benmont Tench. Nickel Creek's music is a blend of bluegrass, folk, and country.
