The Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in the city of Odessa, Ukraine. The orchestra was founded in 1937 and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Eastern Europe. The founding of the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra was a result of the efforts of a group of musicians who wanted to establish a professional orchestra in the city. The orchestra was initially called the Odessa State Symphony Orchestra and was led by conductor Nikolai Anosov. The orchestra's first concert was held on October 7, 1937, and was a great success. One of the highlights of the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1989 Edinburgh International Festival. The orchestra performed a program of works by Ukrainian composers, including Mykola Lysenko and Sergei Prokofiev. The performance was a great success and helped to raise the profile of the orchestra on the international stage. The Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra has also received many awards and accolades over the years. In 1967, the orchestra was awarded the title of Honored Ensemble of the Ukrainian SSR. Today, the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra continues to be one of the leading orchestras in Eastern Europe. The orchestra's current conductor is Hobart Earle, who has been with the orchestra since 1991.
