Artist Info

Enguerrand de Hys was a prominent composer and singer of the late medieval period. He was born in the early 15th century, likely in the region of Picardy in northern France. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he received his musical education in the cathedral schools of Amiens and Cambrai. De Hys first came to prominence as a singer in the court of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the 1430s. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest singers of his time, and was soon appointed as the master of the chapel at the court of Burgundy. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the musical performances at court, as well as composing new works for the chapel choir. De Hys was a prolific composer, and his works were highly regarded during his lifetime. He is best known for his chansons, which were secular songs typically performed by small groups of singers. His chansons were characterized by their intricate harmonies and complex rhythms, and were often written in the form of a rondeau or virelai. In addition to his chansons, de Hys also composed a number of sacred works, including masses and motets. His sacred music was notable for its use of polyphony, a technique in which multiple voices sing different melodies simultaneously. This was a relatively new development in music at the time, and de Hys was one of the pioneers of the style. De Hys' music was highly influential, and his style was imitated by many composers who came after him. He was particularly influential in the development of the Burgundian School, a group of composers who were active in the court of Burgundy in the 15th century. The Burgundian School was known for its use of complex harmonies and rhythms, and its members were among the most important composers of the late medieval period. De Hys' most famous work is his chanson "Mille Regretz," which was written in the early 16th century. The song is a lament for lost love, and is notable for its simple, plaintive melody and its use of chromaticism, a technique in which notes outside of the traditional diatonic scale are used. "Mille Regretz" has been recorded by numerous artists over the years, and remains one of the most popular works of the late medieval period. Despite his success as a composer and singer, de Hys' life was not without its difficulties. He was involved in a number of disputes with other musicians and patrons, and was even imprisoned for a time in the early 1450s. However, he was eventually released and continued to work as a composer and singer until his death in the late 1460s. Today, de Hys is remembered as one of the most important composers of the late medieval period. His music was highly influential in the development of the Burgundian School, and his chansons and sacred works remain popular with performers and audiences alike. While much of his life remains shrouded in mystery, his legacy as a composer and singer continues to be celebrated by music lovers around the world.
