John Popham is a renowned cellist and contemporary classical music artist. He was born in the United States and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a violinist. Popham started playing the cello at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Popham received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He then went on to earn his Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in New York City. During his time at Juilliard, Popham studied with renowned cellist Joel Krosnick. After completing his studies, Popham began his career as a professional cellist. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was invited to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as an orchestral cellist, Popham has also established himself as a leading performer of contemporary classical music. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading composers, including Steve Reich, John Adams, and Philip Glass. One of Popham's most notable performances was his 2010 performance of Steve Reich's "Cello Counterpoint" at the Barbican Centre in London. The performance was part of a celebration of Reich's 75th birthday and was widely praised for its technical precision and emotional depth. Popham has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2008, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is one of the most prestigious awards for young classical musicians in the United States. He has also been a recipient of the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program and the New Music USA Commissioning Music/USA Grant. In addition to his work as a performer, Popham is also a dedicated educator. He has taught at the Eastman School of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Manhattan School of Music. He is currently a faculty member at the University of California, San Diego.
