He was the son of a prominent Serbian composer, conductor, and music educator, Stanojlo Rajicic, who was also the founder of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra. Ivanovic grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from a very young age. He started playing the piano at the age of six and showed exceptional talent and passion for music. Ivanovic received his formal music education at the Belgrade Music Academy, where he studied composition with Marko Tajcevic and piano with Ljubica Maric. He graduated from the academy in 1953 with a degree in composition and piano. After graduation, he continued his studies in Paris, where he studied with Nadia Boulanger, a renowned French composer, and teacher. Boulanger had a significant influence on Ivanovic's musical style and helped him develop his unique voice as a composer. Ivanovic's music is characterized by its lyrical and expressive qualities, as well as its use of traditional Serbian folk music elements. His compositions are often described as being deeply emotional and introspective, with a strong sense of melody and harmony. He was particularly interested in exploring the relationship between music and poetry, and many of his works are inspired by literary works. One of Ivanovic's most significant works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1956. The concerto is a virtuosic and technically demanding work that showcases Ivanovic's skills as a pianist and composer. It is also a deeply emotional and expressive work that reflects Ivanovic's personal struggles and experiences. The concerto has been performed by many renowned pianists, including Lazar Berman, who recorded it for Deutsche Grammophon. Another notable work by Ivanovic is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1961. The symphony is a powerful and dramatic work that reflects Ivanovic's interest in exploring the relationship between music and poetry. The symphony is based on the poem "The Mountain Wreath" by Petar II Petrovic-Njegos, a famous Montenegrin poet. The work has been performed by many orchestras around the world, including the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. Ivanovic also composed a significant amount of chamber music, including several string quartets and sonatas for various instruments.
