Ben Steinberg was a Canadian composer and pianist who was born on August 13, 1930, in Toronto, Ontario. He was the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants who had settled in Canada. Steinberg showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He received his formal musical education at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where he studied piano with Alberto Guerrero and composition with John Weinzweig. Steinberg's early compositions were influenced by the music of Igor Stravinsky and Arnold Schoenberg, and he was particularly interested in the use of serialism in composition. He also drew inspiration from the music of his Jewish heritage, incorporating elements of Jewish folk music into his compositions. In 1952, Steinberg won the prestigious Eaton's Canadian Music Competition for his Piano Sonata No. 1. This early success helped to establish him as a promising young composer, and he went on to win numerous awards and honors throughout his career. Steinberg's compositions are characterized by their complexity and technical virtuosity. He was known for his use of unconventional time signatures and his incorporation of elements of jazz and popular music into his classical compositions. His works often featured intricate rhythms and harmonies, and he was particularly skilled at creating complex polyphonic textures. One of Steinberg's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which was premiered in 1961 by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the solo pianist, featuring complex rhythms and harmonies and a wide range of technical challenges. The work was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and it helped to establish Steinberg as one of Canada's leading composers. Another notable work by Steinberg is his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered in 1957 by the Hart House String Quartet. The quartet is a complex and challenging work that showcases Steinberg's skill at creating intricate polyphonic textures. The work was well-received by critics and helped to establish Steinberg as a leading figure in the Canadian classical music scene. Throughout his career, Steinberg was a prolific composer, producing works in a wide range of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and solo piano pieces. He was also a respected pianist and often performed his own compositions in concert. In addition to his work as a composer and pianist, Steinberg was also a respected music educator. He taught at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music for many years, and he was known for his dedication to his students and his commitment to promoting Canadian music. Steinberg's contributions to Canadian music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1991, and he received the Canadian Music Council's Composer of the Year award in 1992. Ben Steinberg passed away on November 6, 2012, at the age of 82.
