Minsoo Sohn is a renowned classical pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with his virtuosic performances and deep musical insights. Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1970, Sohn showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of four. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music, enrolling him in the Yewon School of Arts, a prestigious music school in Seoul. Sohn's talent quickly became apparent, and he won numerous competitions and awards throughout his youth. In 1986, he won first prize at the Dong-A Music Competition, one of the most prestigious music competitions in Korea. This victory brought him to the attention of the wider music community, and he was soon invited to perform in concerts and festivals throughout Korea. In 1988, Sohn moved to the United States to continue his musical studies. He enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with the renowned pianist and pedagogue Yoheved Kaplinsky. Sohn's time at Juilliard was transformative, and he quickly established himself as one of the school's most promising young pianists. He won numerous awards and competitions, including the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 1991 and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1992. Sohn's success at these competitions brought him to the attention of major orchestras and concert halls around the world. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1993, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 under the baton of Kurt Masur. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and Sohn was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, Sohn continued to perform with major orchestras and conductors around the world. He made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1995, performing Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 under the baton of Claudio Abbado. The performance was a triumph, and Sohn was invited back to perform with the orchestra several times over the next few years. Sohn's reputation as a virtuoso pianist continued to grow, and he became known for his technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann, and he recorded several acclaimed albums of their music. In 2001, Sohn was appointed as a professor of piano at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He has since become one of the school's most beloved and respected faculty members, and he has mentored countless young pianists who have gone on to successful careers in music. Despite his busy schedule as a performer and teacher, Sohn has remained committed to his own artistic development. He has continued to perform in concerts and festivals around the world, and he has expanded his repertoire to include works by contemporary composers such as György Ligeti and Thomas Adès. Throughout his career, Sohn has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the classical music world. In 2005, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the South Korean government, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Korean artist. He has also been awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Gilmore Young Artist Award, and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, among others. Today, Sohn is recognized as one of the most accomplished and respected pianists of his generation.
