Ruth Ehrlich was a renowned classical music artist who made a significant contribution to the world of music. She was born on May 12, 1928, in Vienna, Austria, to a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. Ruth showed an interest in music from a young age and began playing the piano at the age of four. At the age of six, Ruth began taking violin lessons from her father. She quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and began performing in public at the age of eight. Her family fled Austria in 1938 due to the Nazi occupation, and they settled in the United States. Ruth continued her music education in the US and studied with some of the most renowned violinists of the time. In 1946, Ruth made her debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. The performance was a huge success, and Ruth received critical acclaim for her virtuosity and musicality. This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career for Ruth. Over the next few years, Ruth performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. She also performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Musikverein in Vienna. Ruth was known for her technical brilliance and her ability to convey deep emotion through her playing. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Her performances of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin were particularly acclaimed, and she was regarded as one of the greatest interpreters of this repertoire. In addition to her solo performances, Ruth was also a dedicated chamber musician. She was a founding member of the Ehrlich Quartet, which was named after her family. The quartet was renowned for its performances of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, and it toured extensively throughout the world. Throughout her career, Ruth received many awards and honors for her contributions to music. In 1952, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, which is one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. She was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1987, which is the highest honor given to artists by the US government. Ruth continued to perform and record well into her seventies. Her final performance was in 2001, when she played the Brahms Violin Concerto with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. She passed away on December 20, 2003, at the age of 75.
