He was born on January 16, 1959, in Augusta, Georgia, and grew up in Syracuse, New York. Weiskopf started playing the saxophone at the age of 10 and was soon recognized as a prodigious talent. He attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he studied with renowned saxophonist Ramon Ricker. After graduating from Eastman, Weiskopf moved to New York City in 1981 to pursue a career in jazz. He quickly established himself as a sought-after sideman, playing with jazz legends such as Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, and Steely Dan. In 1983, Weiskopf joined the jazz fusion group, Steely Dan, and toured with them for several years. In addition to his work as a sideman, Weiskopf has released numerous albums as a bandleader. His debut album, "Introspection," was released in 1987 and received critical acclaim. He has since released over 20 albums as a leader, including "Song for My Mother," "Siren," and "Overdrive." Weiskopf is also a prolific composer and arranger. He has written music for films, television, and commercials, as well as for his own albums. His compositions have been performed by jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Joe Lovano, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Weiskopf is also a respected educator. He has taught at the Manhattan School of Music, the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the Juilliard School. He has also written several instructional books and DVDs, including "Intervallic Improvisation: The Modern Sound" and "Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony." Weiskopf has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2001, he was named a Guggenheim Fellow in Music Composition. He has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for his performance on "Siren" in 1996.
