Karl Ulrich Schnabel was a renowned classical pianist and teacher, born on August 6, 1909, in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of the famous pianist and composer Artur Schnabel and the singer Therese Behr Schnabel. Karl Ulrich Schnabel grew up in a musical family and started playing the piano at a young age. He received his first piano lessons from his father, who was his primary teacher until he was 16 years old. In 1925, Karl Ulrich Schnabel made his debut as a pianist, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He continued his studies at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, where he studied with Leonid Kreutzer and Edwin Fischer. In 1929, he won the Mendelssohn Prize in Berlin, which was a significant achievement for a young pianist. In 1933, Karl Ulrich Schnabel left Germany and moved to Switzerland, where he continued his studies with Edwin Fischer. He also started performing in concerts throughout Europe, including in Switzerland, France, and England. In 1938, he made his debut in the United States, performing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Arturo Toscanini. During World War II, Karl Ulrich Schnabel served in the United States Army, where he played in the Army Band and gave concerts for the troops. After the war, he returned to Europe and resumed his career as a pianist. He performed in concerts and recitals throughout Europe and the United States, and he also recorded extensively. Karl Ulrich Schnabel was known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. He was particularly admired for his performances of Schubert's piano sonatas, which he recorded in their entirety. He was also a respected teacher, and he taught at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and at the University of Illinois in the United States. In addition to his performing and teaching career, Karl Ulrich Schnabel was also a composer. He wrote several works for piano, including a piano concerto, a sonata, and several sets of variations. Karl Ulrich Schnabel received many honors and awards throughout his career. In 1957, he was awarded the Mozart Medal by the Mozartgemeinde Wien for his contributions to the interpretation of Mozart's music. In 1971, he was awarded the Goethe Medal by the German government for his contributions to German culture. He was also awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Illinois and the University of Salzburg. Karl Ulrich Schnabel continued to perform and teach until his death on August 27, 2001, in Lakeville, Connecticut. He was 92 years old. He left behind a legacy as a pianist, teacher, and composer, and his recordings and performances continue to be admired by classical music enthusiasts around the world.
