Raymond Allard was born on May 12, 1955, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Allard showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later switched to the cello and began studying under the tutelage of Yuli Turovsky, a renowned cellist and conductor. Allard's talent and dedication to music quickly became apparent, and he began performing in public at a young age. He won his first competition at the age of 12 and went on to win numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1973, Allard joined the Montreal Symphony Orchestra as a cellist. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the principal cellist in 1978. During his time with the orchestra, Allard performed in countless concerts and recordings, including several with renowned conductors such as Charles Dutoit and Zubin Mehta. In addition to his work with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Allard also pursued a solo career. He performed in recitals and concerts around the world, including in Europe, Asia, and North America. He also collaborated with other musicians, including pianist Anton Kuerti and violinist James Ehnes. Allard's talent and dedication to music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1980, he won the prestigious Prix d'Europe, a scholarship awarded to outstanding young musicians. He was also awarded the Order of Canada in 2001, one of the country's highest honors. One of Allard's most notable performances was his rendition of Bach's Cello Suites. He recorded the suites in 1995, and the recording was widely praised for its technical skill and emotional depth. The recording went on to win several awards, including a Juno Award for Best Classical Album. Allard continued to perform and record throughout his career, even after retiring from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 2011. He remained active in the music community, serving as a mentor to young musicians and teaching at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. Sadly, Allard passed away on January 31, 2021, at the age of 65. His death was mourned by the music community, with many musicians and fans paying tribute to his talent and contributions to classical music.
