Mei-Fang Lin is a Taiwanese-American composer who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1963, Lin showed an early interest in music and began studying piano at the age of six. She later went on to study composition at the National Taiwan University of Arts, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1985. After completing her undergraduate studies, Lin moved to the United States to pursue further education in music. She enrolled in the University of Michigan, where she earned her Master of Music degree in composition in 1988. She then went on to earn her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993. Throughout her career, Lin has been recognized for her innovative and unique approach to composition. Her works often incorporate elements of traditional Taiwanese music, as well as Western classical music. She has also been known to incorporate elements of jazz and other genres into her compositions. One of Lin's most notable works is her composition "The Seven Seals," which was commissioned by the Taipei Chinese Orchestra in 2000. The piece is based on the biblical story of the seven seals, and incorporates traditional Taiwanese instruments such as the erhu and the pipa. The piece has been performed by orchestras around the world, including the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Another notable work by Lin is her composition "The Song of the Pipa," which was commissioned by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra in 2005. The piece is based on a traditional Chinese folk song, and features the pipa, a four-stringed Chinese instrument. The piece has been performed by orchestras around the world, including the China National Symphony Orchestra and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her work as a composer, Lin has also been active as a teacher and mentor to young musicians. She has taught at several universities, including the University of Texas at Austin and the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has also served as a guest lecturer and conductor at universities and music festivals around the world. Lin's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2002, she was awarded the National Award for Arts in Taiwan, and in 2006, she was awarded the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
