Carin Bartosch Edström was a Swedish composer and pianist who was born on August 22, 1935, in Stockholm, Sweden. She was the daughter of a composer and a pianist, and her parents recognized her musical talent at an early age. She began playing the piano at the age of four and started composing her own music when she was just six years old. Edström studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where she received a degree in piano performance. She also studied composition with the renowned Swedish composer Karl-Birger Blomdahl. After completing her studies, Edström began working as a freelance composer and pianist. Edström's music is characterized by its unique blend of traditional classical music and modernist techniques. She was particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of electronic music and was one of the first Swedish composers to work with electronic instruments. Her music often features complex rhythms and harmonies, and she was known for her use of unconventional instruments and sounds. One of Edström's most famous works is her Piano Concerto No. 1, which she composed in 1963. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with intricate piano passages and complex orchestration. The work was premiered by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, with Edström herself as the soloist. Another notable work by Edström is her String Quartet No. 1, which she composed in 1967. The quartet is a challenging and complex work, with intricate counterpoint and unconventional harmonies. The work was premiered by the Stockholm String Quartet and has since become a staple of the modern string quartet repertoire. Edström was also known for her work in electronic music. In 1968, she composed the electronic work "Klangbilder" for the Swedish Radio. The work features a series of electronic sounds and textures, which Edström manipulated and combined to create a unique sonic landscape. Throughout her career, Edström received numerous awards and honors for her work. In 1970, she was awarded the prestigious Christ Johnson Prize for her contributions to Swedish music. She was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and served as the chair of the Swedish Composers' Society. Edström continued to compose and perform throughout her life, and her music remains an important part of the Swedish classical music tradition. She passed away on December 10, 2013, at the age of 78.
