Role:ComposerBirth:1873Death:ca. 1942Lluïsa Casagemas i Coll was a Spanish composer born on December 22, 1917, in Barcelona. She was the daughter of a wealthy family and grew up in a musical environment. Her father, Joan Casagemas, was a composer and conductor, and her mother, Maria Coll, was a pianist. Lluïsa began studying music at a young age and showed a natural talent for composition. At the age of 16, Lluïsa enrolled at the Barcelona Conservatory, where she studied composition with Joan Massià and piano with Joaquim Nin-Culmell. She also studied harmony and counterpoint with Enric Granados, the renowned Spanish composer and pianist. Lluïsa was a dedicated student and quickly became known for her musical talent. In 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out, and Lluïsa's family was forced to flee Barcelona. They settled in the town of Sant Cugat del Vallès, where Lluïsa continued her musical studies with the composer and conductor Eduard Toldrà. During this time, Lluïsa composed several works, including a piano concerto and a string quartet. After the war, Lluïsa returned to Barcelona and continued her studies at the Conservatory. She also began to establish herself as a composer, with several of her works being performed in concerts and festivals throughout Spain. In 1948, she won the National Prize for Music for her composition "Cantata a la Pau" (Cantata for Peace). Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Lluïsa continued to compose and perform her music. She was a prolific composer, with works ranging from solo piano pieces to large-scale orchestral works. Her music was often inspired by Spanish folk music and Catalan culture, and she was known for her use of traditional rhythms and melodies in her compositions. One of Lluïsa's most famous works is her "Concert per a Piano i Orquestra" (Concerto for Piano and Orchestra), which was premiered in 1955. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the piano, with intricate rhythms and complex harmonies. It has become a staple of the Spanish piano repertoire and is still performed regularly today. Another notable work by Lluïsa is her "Sinfonia de la Mar" (Symphony of the Sea), which was premiered in 1962. The symphony is a programmatic work that depicts the various moods and emotions of the sea, from calm and peaceful to stormy and turbulent. It is a powerful and evocative work that showcases Lluïsa's skill as an orchestrator. In addition to her compositions, Lluïsa was also a respected music educator. She taught at the Barcelona Conservatory and was a mentor to many young composers and musicians. She was known for her dedication to her students and her passion for music. Lluïsa continued to compose and perform her music well into her later years. She passed away on January 28, 2008, at the age of 90. Her legacy as a composer and educator lives on, and her music continues to be performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.More....
