Rudolf Kelterborn was a Swiss composer and conductor who was born on September 14, 1931, in Basel, Switzerland. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Kelterborn began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin. He later studied composition with Willy Burkhard at the Basel Conservatory, where he received his diploma in 1953. After completing his studies, Kelterborn worked as a freelance composer and conductor. He was also a member of the Basel Symphony Orchestra, where he played violin and viola. In 1957, he was awarded a scholarship to study composition with Boris Blacher in Berlin. This experience had a significant impact on Kelterborn's musical style, as he was exposed to the avant-garde music of the time. Kelterborn's early works were influenced by the serialism of the Second Viennese School, but he later developed his own unique style. His music is characterized by its complexity, dissonance, and use of unconventional techniques. Kelterborn was also interested in electronic music and incorporated electronic sounds into some of his compositions. One of Kelterborn's most significant works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1960. The symphony is a large-scale work that showcases Kelterborn's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create complex textures. The work is divided into four movements, each of which explores different musical ideas. The symphony was well-received by critics and established Kelterborn as one of the leading composers of his generation. In addition to his symphonies, Kelterborn composed numerous chamber works, including string quartets, piano trios, and solo pieces. One of his most famous chamber works is his String Quartet No. 3, which he composed in 1971. The quartet is a challenging work that requires virtuosic playing from all four performers. It is characterized by its use of extended techniques, such as glissandi and harmonics, and its complex rhythmic patterns. Kelterborn was also known for his vocal music, including his opera Der Kirschgarten, which he composed in 1984. The opera is based on the play The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov and explores themes of social change and the decline of the aristocracy. The work is notable for its use of electronic sounds and its unconventional vocal writing. Throughout his career, Kelterborn was recognized for his contributions to contemporary music. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Prix de Rome in 1958 and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 1995. He was also a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the Berlin Academy of Arts. Kelterborn continued to compose and conduct until his death on March 25, 2017, at the age of 85. His legacy as a composer and innovator in contemporary music continues to inspire musicians and audiences around the world.
