In 1898, at the age of 19, Peter van Anrooy made his debut as a conductor with the Breda Orchestra. He went on to conduct several other orchestras in the Netherlands, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Hague Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also the conductor of the Dutch Opera Company from 1918 to 1927. As a composer, Peter van Anrooy was known for his operas, choral works, and orchestral music. His most famous work is the opera "De Kleine Johannes" (The Little John), which premiered in 1918 and was based on a children's book by Frederik van Eeden. The opera was a huge success and was performed over 200 times in the Netherlands and Belgium. Another notable work by Peter van Anrooy is his "Overture to King Lear," which was composed in 1904. The overture was inspired by Shakespeare's play and is considered one of his best orchestral works. It has been performed by many orchestras around the world and is still popular today. Peter van Anrooy also composed several choral works, including "De Boerenbruiloft" (The Peasant Wedding), which was written in 1905.
