Jiri Pokorny was a renowned classical music artist who was born on January 1, 1948, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He was a talented musician who started playing the cello at a young age and quickly showed a natural aptitude for the instrument. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Pokorny began his formal music education at the Prague Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of Professor Karel Pravoslav Sroubek. He later continued his studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he was mentored by Professor Miloš Sádlo, a renowned cellist and pedagogue. During his studies, Pokorny participated in numerous competitions and won several awards, including the first prize at the Prague Spring International Music Festival in 1968. This achievement marked the beginning of his successful career as a professional cellist. After completing his studies, Pokorny joined the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, where he played as a principal cellist for over a decade. He also performed as a soloist with various orchestras, including the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1980, Pokorny left Czechoslovakia and moved to the United States, where he continued his career as a cellist. He joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a principal cellist and played with the orchestra for over 20 years. During his time with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he also performed as a soloist with the orchestra and collaborated with renowned conductors such as Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Bernstein. Pokorny's talent and dedication to his craft earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. He was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1985, which recognized his exceptional talent and potential as a young artist. He was also awarded the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Erich Leinsdorf Award in 1993, which recognized his outstanding contributions to the orchestra. In addition to his work as a performer, Pokorny was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Tanglewood Music Center, where he inspired and influenced many young musicians. Pokorny's legacy as a cellist and musician continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world. He passed away on February 13, 2017, at the age of 69, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
