I Cantori New York is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1984 by Mark Shapiro, a conductor and composer. The ensemble is based in New York City and is known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. The founding of I Cantori New York was inspired by Shapiro's desire to create a professional-level choir that would perform a wide range of repertoire, from early music to contemporary works. He assembled a group of singers who shared his vision and began rehearsing in a small church in Greenwich Village. Over the years, the ensemble has grown in size and reputation, attracting some of the finest singers in the New York area. Today, I Cantori New York is a 40-member choir that performs regularly in New York City and has toured internationally. The ensemble's repertoire is diverse and includes works by composers from the Renaissance to the present day. They have performed major choral works such as Bach's Mass in B Minor, Handel's Messiah, and Mozart's Requiem, as well as contemporary works by composers such as Arvo Pärt, John Tavener, and Eric Whitacre. One of the highlights of I Cantori New York's career was their performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at Carnegie Hall in 2005. The performance was praised by critics for its "clarity, precision, and emotional depth" and was hailed as one of the best performances of the work in recent memory. In addition to their performances, I Cantori New York has also been recognized for their recordings. They have released several albums, including a recording of Pärt's Passio, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003. The ensemble has also been recognized for their commitment to new music. They have commissioned and premiered works by several composers, including Robert Paterson, David Lang, and Caroline Shaw. I Cantori New York has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1999, they were awarded the ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming. They have also been recognized by the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Despite the challenges faced by classical music ensembles in recent years, I Cantori New York has continued to thrive. They remain committed to their mission of performing a wide range of repertoire at the highest level of excellence, and their performances continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
