The Walther Straram Orchestra was a French classical music ensemble that was founded in 1909 by Walther Straram, a German-born conductor and music director. The orchestra was known for its innovative programming and its commitment to promoting contemporary music, particularly the works of French composers. Walther Straram was born in Berlin in 1876 and began his career as a violinist. He moved to Paris in 1900 and quickly established himself as a conductor, working with the Concerts Colonne and the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. In 1909, he founded his own orchestra, which he named the Société des Nouveaux Concerts, later renamed the Walther Straram Orchestra. The orchestra's first concert was held on November 7, 1909, at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. The program included works by Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky, as well as a world premiere of a piece by Maurice Delage. The concert was a critical and commercial success, and the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its innovative programming and its commitment to contemporary music. Over the years, the Walther Straram Orchestra performed many important premieres, including the French premieres of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" and "Petrushka," as well as works by Bartók, Berg, Hindemith, and Schoenberg. The orchestra also premiered many works by French composers, including Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud, and Honegger. The orchestra's main members included many of the leading musicians of the day, including violinist Jacques Thibaud, cellist Pablo Casals, and pianist Alfred Cortot. The orchestra also worked with many important conductors, including Pierre Monteux, Ernest Ansermet, and Charles Munch. One of the highlights of the Walther Straram Orchestra's career was its performance at the 1927 International Society for Contemporary Music festival in Frankfurt. The orchestra performed works by Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and Webern, as well as a world premiere of a piece by French composer Marcel Mihalovici. The performance was a great success, and the orchestra received international acclaim for its innovative programming and its commitment to contemporary music. The Walther Straram Orchestra also made many recordings, including several of the works of Debussy and Ravel. These recordings are still highly regarded today for their clarity and precision, as well as their commitment to the composer's intentions. Despite its many successes, the Walther Straram Orchestra faced financial difficulties throughout its existence. The orchestra relied heavily on the support of its founder, Walther Straram, who often used his own money to finance the orchestra's performances and recordings. In 1934, Straram was forced to disband the orchestra due to financial difficulties. Today, the Walther Straram Orchestra is remembered as one of the most important ensembles of the early 20th century. Its commitment to contemporary music and its innovative programming continue to inspire musicians and audiences alike. The orchestra's recordings remain an important part of the classical music canon, and its legacy continues to be felt in the world of classical music today.
