Tenet is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2007 by soprano Jolle Greenleaf and tenor Aaron Sheehan. The ensemble is based in New York City and is known for its performances of early music, particularly from the Baroque era. Jolle Greenleaf and Aaron Sheehan met while studying at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. They both shared a passion for early music and decided to form an ensemble that would focus on performing this repertoire. They named the ensemble Tenet, which means "principle" or "belief" in Latin, to reflect their commitment to the music they were performing. The founding members of Tenet were Jolle Greenleaf (soprano), Aaron Sheehan (tenor), Molly Quinn (violin), Robert Mealy (violin), James Waldo (viola), and Doug Balliett (bass). Over the years, the ensemble has had a rotating cast of musicians, but Greenleaf and Sheehan have remained the core members. Tenet has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. They have also performed at international festivals, such as the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, Netherlands, and the Tage Alter Musik in Regensburg, Germany. One of Tenet's most notable performances was their 2014 concert at Carnegie Hall, which was part of the venue's "La Serenissima: Music and Arts from the Venetian Republic" festival. The ensemble performed works by Venetian composers such as Claudio Monteverdi and Giovanni Gabrieli, as well as lesser-known composers like Barbara Strozzi and Benedetto Ferrari. The concert received rave reviews from critics, with The New York Times calling it "a triumph of programming and performance." Tenet has also received numerous awards and accolades for their performances. In 2012, they were awarded the Noah Greenberg Award by the American Musicological Society, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the performance of early music. They were also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2015 for their recording of the music of 17th-century composer Johann Rosenmüller. In addition to their performances, Tenet is also committed to education and outreach. They have conducted workshops and masterclasses for students at universities and conservatories across the United States, and have also worked with community organizations to bring early music to underserved audiences. Overall, Tenet has established itself as one of the leading ensembles in the field of early music. Their commitment to the repertoire and their innovative programming have earned them a loyal following and critical acclaim. As they continue to perform and record, they are sure to inspire new generations of musicians and music lovers to explore the rich history of early music.
