Sasha Argov was a prominent Israeli composer and pianist who was born on August 21, 1914, in Kiev, Ukraine. His birth name was Alexander Abramovich and he was the youngest of six children. His family moved to Palestine in 1925, where he grew up in Tel Aviv. Argov's musical talent was evident from a young age, and he began studying piano at the age of six. He continued his studies at the Tel Aviv Conservatory, where he was taught by some of the most prominent musicians of the time, including Paul Ben-Haim and Leo Kestenberg. In 1936, Argov began his career as a composer, and his first song, "The Girl from the Port," became an instant hit. This success led to him being hired as a pianist and arranger for the Palestine Broadcasting Service, where he worked for several years. During World War II, Argov served in the British Army, where he entertained troops with his music. After the war, he returned to Israel and continued to compose and perform. He became known for his unique style, which blended elements of classical music with Israeli folk music. Argov's most famous works include "The White Rose of Athens," "The Girl from the Port," and "The Song of the Palmach." His music was often performed by some of the most famous Israeli singers of the time, including Yaffa Yarkoni and Shoshana Damari. In addition to his work as a composer, Argov was also a respected pianist. He performed in concerts throughout Israel and Europe, and was known for his virtuosic playing style. Argov's career was cut short when he died suddenly of a heart attack on October 7, 1995, at the age of 81. However, his music continues to be celebrated and performed to this day. Overall, Sasha Argov was a talented and influential composer who helped to shape the sound of Israeli music.
