Jim Gailloreto's Jazz String Quintet is a Chicago-based classical music ensemble that combines the sounds of jazz and classical music. The quintet was founded in 2004 by Jim Gailloreto, a saxophonist and composer, who wanted to explore the possibilities of blending jazz and classical music with a string ensemble. The main members of the quintet are Jim Gailloreto on saxophone, Zach Brock on violin, Clark Sommers on bass, Tom Van Dyke on guitar, and Gerald Dowd on drums. All of the members are accomplished musicians in their own right, with extensive experience in both jazz and classical music. The quintet's music is characterized by its unique blend of jazz and classical elements. The group's repertoire includes original compositions by Gailloreto, as well as arrangements of jazz standards and classical pieces. The group's sound is characterized by its intricate harmonies, complex rhythms, and virtuosic solos. One of the quintet's most notable performances was at the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2006. The group performed a set of original compositions and arrangements, which received critical acclaim from both jazz and classical music critics. The performance was also broadcast on Chicago's public radio station, WBEZ. In addition to their performance at the Chicago Jazz Festival, the quintet has also performed at other major jazz festivals, including the Detroit Jazz Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival. The group has also performed at major concert halls and venues, including the Chicago Symphony Center and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The quintet has received numerous awards and accolades for their music. In 2007, the group was awarded the Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grant, which allowed them to perform and teach in schools and community centers throughout the United States. The group has also been nominated for several awards, including the Chicago Music Awards and the Jazz Journalists Association Awards. Despite their success, the quintet remains committed to exploring new musical territory and pushing the boundaries of jazz and classical music. They continue to perform and record new music, and are widely regarded as one of the most innovative and exciting classical music ensembles in the United States.
