By the age of ten, he had already won several local competitions and was performing in public. In 1977, Dieter's family moved to Vienna, Austria, where he continued his musical education. He studied at the Vienna Conservatory and later at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. During this time, he also began to study composition and conducting. Dieter's talent as a pianist was soon recognized by the music world, and he began to receive invitations to perform at major concerts and festivals. In 1985, he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
