Hyperion Ensemble is a classical music group that was founded in 1992 in Belgrade, Serbia. The group is known for its unique blend of traditional Balkan music and contemporary classical music. The ensemble consists of a variety of instruments, including violins, violas, cellos, double basses, flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, percussion, and traditional Balkan instruments such as the gusle, kaval, and tamburica. The founding members of Hyperion Ensemble were all graduates of the Belgrade Music Academy, and they shared a passion for exploring the intersection of traditional Balkan music and contemporary classical music. The group quickly gained a reputation for their innovative approach to music, and they began performing at festivals and concerts throughout Serbia and the Balkans. One of the highlights of Hyperion Ensemble's early career was their performance at the 1994 Belgrade Music Festival. The group performed a program of contemporary classical music that included works by composers such as György Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Arvo Pärt. The performance was well-received by both audiences and critics, and it helped to establish Hyperion Ensemble as one of the most exciting and innovative classical music groups in the Balkans. Over the years, Hyperion Ensemble has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, incorporating elements of jazz, rock, and world music into their performances. The group has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and composers, including Serbian jazz pianist Vasil Hadžimanov, American composer Philip Glass, and British composer Michael Nyman. One of the most notable collaborations in Hyperion Ensemble's career was their work with Serbian composer Aleksandar Simic. Simic is known for his innovative approach to music, and he has been a major influence on the development of contemporary classical music in Serbia. Hyperion Ensemble worked closely with Simic on a number of projects, including the 2001 album "Balkanology," which featured a blend of traditional Balkan music and contemporary classical music. In addition to their collaborations with other musicians and composers, Hyperion Ensemble has also been recognized for their own original compositions. The group's 2005 album "Hyperion Plays Hyperion" featured a number of original compositions by members of the ensemble, including "Balkan Suite" by violinist Srdjan Paunovic and "Hyperion Tango" by cellist Dejan Bozic. Hyperion Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1998, the group was awarded the "Golden Badge" by the Serbian Ministry of Culture for their contributions to the development of contemporary classical music in Serbia. In 2003, the group was awarded the "October Prize" by the City of Belgrade for their outstanding achievements in the field of music. One of the most memorable performances in Hyperion Ensemble's career was their 2007 concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The group performed a program of traditional Balkan music and contemporary classical music, including works by Simic, Glass, and Nyman. The concert was a huge success, and it helped to introduce Hyperion Ensemble to a wider international audience. Today, Hyperion Ensemble continues to be one of the most innovative and exciting classical music groups in the Balkans.
