The New Choir of Men and Boys of Saint Thomas Episcopal Church is a renowned classical music ensemble based in New York City. The choir has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century when it was founded by Dr. T. Tertius Noble, a prominent organist and composer. The choir's roots can be traced back to 1906 when Dr. Noble was appointed as the organist and choirmaster at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church. He immediately set out to establish a choir that would rival the great English cathedral choirs of the time. He recruited a group of talented boys from the church's Sunday school and trained them to sing in the traditional Anglican choral style. Under Dr. Noble's leadership, the choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence. They performed regularly at the church's Sunday services and also gave concerts throughout New York City. In 1913, the choir made its first recording, which was a collection of Christmas carols. Over the years, the choir continued to grow and evolve. In 1940, Dr. Noble retired and was succeeded by Gerre Hancock, who served as the choir's director for over 30 years. Under Hancock's leadership, the choir expanded its repertoire to include works from a wide range of composers, including Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Britten. One of the choir's most notable performances took place in 1965 when they sang at the funeral of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The choir's rendition of "The Lord's Prayer" was widely praised and helped to cement their reputation as one of the finest choral ensembles in the country. In 2004, the choir underwent a major transformation when it became the New Choir of Men and Boys. This change reflected the choir's commitment to inclusivity and diversity, as they began to welcome male singers of all ages and backgrounds. Today, the New Choir of Men and Boys continues to be a leading force in the world of classical music. They perform regularly at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church and also tour extensively throughout the United States and Europe. In 2019, the choir was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or award for their recording of Handel's "Messiah." Throughout their long and storied history, the New Choir of Men and Boys of Saint Thomas Episcopal Church has remained committed to excellence and innovation. They have inspired countless musicians and audiences around the world and continue to be a shining example of the power of music to bring people together.
