Luna Nova is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1997 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for contemporary music. The ensemble is based in the United States and is known for its innovative programming and performances of new music. The founding members of Luna Nova were flutist Lisa Jelle, clarinetist Jesse Krebs, and pianist/composer Keith Carpenter. They were later joined by violinist/violist Mary Jo Gothmann and cellist Eric Kutz. The ensemble has since expanded to include a rotating roster of guest performers. Luna Nova's mission is to promote contemporary classical music and to collaborate with composers to create new works. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered numerous pieces by composers such as David Gompper, David Lang, and Augusta Read Thomas. One of Luna Nova's most notable performances was at the 2002 World Saxophone Congress in Minneapolis, where they premiered David Gompper's "Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra" with the Minnesota Orchestra. The performance was well-received and led to Luna Nova being invited to perform at the 2003 International Saxophone Symposium in Washington, D.C. In 2004, Luna Nova released their debut album, "Luna Nova: New Music for Flute, Clarinet, and Piano." The album features works by composers such as John Corigliano, Libby Larsen, and Keith Carpenter. It received positive reviews and helped to establish Luna Nova as a leading ensemble in the contemporary classical music scene. Luna Nova has also been recognized for their educational outreach efforts. They have performed and given workshops at schools and universities throughout the United States, and have been praised for their ability to engage and inspire young musicians. In addition to their performances and educational work, Luna Nova has also been involved in several collaborative projects. They have worked with visual artists, dancers, and poets to create interdisciplinary performances that combine music with other art forms. Overall, Luna Nova has established itself as a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is dedicated to promoting contemporary classical music. Their commitment to collaboration and their willingness to take risks has earned them a loyal following and numerous accolades.
