Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Michael Rutherford are three of the most influential musicians in the world of classical music. Together, they formed the band Genesis, which became one of the most successful and innovative bands of the 1970s and 1980s. Tony Banks was born on March 27, 1950, in East Hoathly, Sussex, England. He began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the guitar and bass. In 1967, he formed Genesis with Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips. Banks was the primary songwriter for the band, and his keyboard work was a defining element of their sound. Banks' compositions for Genesis were often complex and ambitious, incorporating elements of classical music, jazz, and rock. His use of synthesizers and other electronic instruments helped to define the sound of progressive rock in the 1970s. Some of his most notable compositions for Genesis include "The Musical Box," "Supper's Ready," and "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight." In addition to his work with Genesis, Banks has released several solo albums, including "A Curious Feeling" and "The Fugitive." He has also composed music for films and television, including the score for the 1986 film "Quicksilver." Phil Collins was born on January 30, 1951, in Chiswick, London, England. He began playing the drums at a young age and later learned to play the piano and guitar. In 1970, he joined Genesis as their drummer, and he later became the band's lead vocalist after Peter Gabriel left in 1975. Collins' distinctive voice and energetic drumming style helped to propel Genesis to even greater success in the 1980s. He also began a successful solo career during this time, releasing hit songs like "In the Air Tonight" and "Against All Odds." Collins' compositions for Genesis were often more straightforward and pop-oriented than Banks' or Rutherford's, but they were no less influential. Some of his most notable compositions for the band include "Follow You Follow Me," "Misunderstanding," and "Invisible Touch." In addition to his work with Genesis and as a solo artist, Collins has also composed music for films, including the score for the 1988 film "Buster." He has won numerous awards for his music, including seven Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Michael Rutherford was born on October 2, 1950, in Guildford, Surrey, England. He began playing the guitar at a young age and later learned to play the bass and keyboards. In 1967, he formed Genesis with Banks, Gabriel, and Phillips. Rutherford's contributions to Genesis were primarily as a bassist and guitarist, but he also wrote several of the band's most memorable songs. His compositions often had a more melodic and pop-oriented feel than Banks' or Collins', but they were no less innovative. Some of his most notable compositions for Genesis include "Follow You Follow Me," "Turn It On Again," and "Land of Confusion." In addition to his work with Genesis, Rutherford has also released several solo albums and has collaborated with other musicians, including Paul Carrack and Mike + The Mechanics. He has also composed music for films and television, including the score for the 1985 film "White Nights." Together, Banks, Collins, and Rutherford helped to define the sound of progressive rock in the 1970s and 1980s. Their innovative compositions and use of electronic instruments helped to push the boundaries of what was possible in rock music.
