Proteus 7 is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2007 by seven musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is based in New York City and has gained a reputation for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances. The founding members of Proteus 7 were violinists Curtis Macomber and Amy Kauffman, violist Jessica Troy, cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, flutist Tara Helen O'Connor, clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois, and pianist Michael Brown. All of the members were accomplished soloists and chamber musicians in their own right, and they came together with the goal of exploring the rich repertoire of chamber music for mixed ensembles. Since its founding, Proteus 7 has performed extensively throughout the United States and abroad, appearing at major concert halls and festivals. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including composers, dancers, and visual artists. One of the highlights of Proteus 7's career was its performance at the 2010 Chamber Music America Conference in New York City. The ensemble was selected to perform as part of the conference's showcase concert, which featured some of the most promising young chamber ensembles in the country. Proteus 7's performance was widely praised for its technical precision and musical sensitivity, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading chamber groups of its generation. In 2012, Proteus 7 released its debut album, entitled "American Vernacular: New Music for Mixed Ensemble." The album featured works by a diverse group of American composers, including John Harbison, Joan Tower, and Derek Bermel. The album received critical acclaim and was named one of the top classical recordings of the year by several major publications. In addition to its performances and recordings, Proteus 7 has also been recognized for its educational outreach efforts. The ensemble has conducted masterclasses and workshops for students of all ages, and it has worked closely with schools and community organizations to promote the importance of music education. Proteus 7 has received numerous awards and honors throughout its career. In 2011, the ensemble was awarded the Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grant, which allowed it to develop and present a series of educational programs in schools and community centers. In 2013, the ensemble was named a finalist for the prestigious Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that demonstrate a commitment to innovative programming and the performance of new music. Today, Proteus 7 continues to be one of the most exciting and dynamic chamber ensembles in the world. With its commitment to exploring new repertoire and collaborating with artists from a wide range of disciplines, the ensemble is helping to redefine the boundaries of classical music and inspire audiences around the globe.
