Ensemble 24 is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2014 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is based in New York City and is made up of six members: four string players and two pianists. The founding members of Ensemble 24 are violinists Sarah Crocker and Emily Daggett Smith, violist Angela Pickett, cellist Hannah Collins, and pianists Yoon Lee and Andrea Lam. All six members of the ensemble are accomplished musicians who have performed with major orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world. Ensemble 24 takes its name from the fact that it performs all 24 of the string quartets and piano quartets by Ludwig van Beethoven. The ensemble's mission is to explore the depth and breadth of Beethoven's music and to share it with audiences around the world. Since its founding, Ensemble 24 has performed at major concert halls and festivals in the United States and Europe. The ensemble has been praised for its virtuosity, precision, and emotional depth, and has won numerous awards and accolades. One of the highlights of Ensemble 24's career was its performance of all 24 of Beethoven's string quartets and piano quartets in a single weekend at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The marathon concert series was a feat of endurance and musicianship, and was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. Ensemble 24 has also performed at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Ravinia Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Salzburg Festival, among others. The ensemble has collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians, including pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Joshua Bell, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to its performances, Ensemble 24 is committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and has developed a curriculum for schools that explores the life and music of Beethoven. Ensemble 24 has won numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. The ensemble's debut album, which featured Beethoven's Op. 18 string quartets, was praised by critics for its "impeccable musicianship" and "deep emotional resonance." The album won the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. Ensemble 24 has also been recognized for its commitment to new music. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered works by some of today's leading composers, including John Adams, Jennifer Higdon, and Kaija Saariaho. Ensemble 24's members are all passionate advocates for classical music and chamber music in particular. They believe that chamber music has the power to connect people across cultures and generations, and to inspire and uplift audiences in profound ways. Looking to the future, Ensemble 24 plans to continue exploring the music of Beethoven and other great composers, and to share that music with audiences around the world. The ensemble is committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and to inspiring the next generation of musicians and music lovers.
