Jim Lotz was born on May 12, 1950, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Lotz showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Lotz's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Vladimir Horowitz, at the age of six. Horowitz recognized Lotz's potential and became his mentor, guiding him through his early years of musical development. Lotz continued his musical education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of Rosina Lhevinne. He graduated from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1972 and went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the same institution in 1974. Throughout his career, Lotz has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall. He has also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Lotz's most notable performances was his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1975, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5.
