Born in 1958 in New York City, Schultz grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, which helped to shape his musical interests and aspirations. Schultz began playing the guitar at the age of 12 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. He studied with several renowned guitarists, including Sharon Isbin and Oscar Ghiglia, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music. He later earned a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Throughout his career, Schultz has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician. He has appeared at major concert venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center.
