He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Degenne showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Degenne's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began studying at the Paris Conservatory at the age of 12 and quickly became one of the most promising young musicians in France. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers in the country, including Nadia Boulanger and Marcel Dupré. In 1952, Degenne won first prize in the prestigious Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Piano Competition. This was a major achievement for the young musician and helped to launch his career. He began performing in concerts throughout France and quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. Over the next few years, Degenne continued to perform in concerts throughout Europe and the United States. He played with some of the most renowned orchestras in the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also performed at some of the most prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. In 1960, Degenne was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the complete works of Chopin. This was a major achievement for the musician and helped to cement his reputation as one of the greatest pianists of his time. He continued to record throughout his career, producing over 50 albums of classical music. Degenne was known for his virtuosic playing style and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart. His performances were always highly anticipated and he was often praised for his technical skill and his ability to connect with his audience. In addition to his performing career, Degenne was also a respected music teacher. He taught at the Paris Conservatory for many years and was known for his dedication to his students. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music, including the pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
