Quartetto Martesana is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 in Milan, Italy. The quartet is composed of four talented musicians: violinists Federico Guglielmo and Stefano Barneschi, violist Luca Sanzò, and cellist Angelo Zanin. The ensemble has gained international recognition for their exceptional performances of classical music, particularly works from the Baroque and Classical periods. The quartet's founding members, Federico Guglielmo and Stefano Barneschi, met while studying at the Conservatory of Milan. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and decided to form a quartet. They were soon joined by Luca Sanzò and Angelo Zanin, both of whom were also studying at the Conservatory. The quartet's name, Martesana, is a reference to the Martesana Canal, which runs through Milan and is known for its beauty and tranquility. Quartetto Martesana's repertoire is diverse, ranging from the works of Bach and Vivaldi to those of Mozart and Beethoven. The quartet is particularly known for their performances of lesser-known works from the Baroque and Classical periods, which they have brought to life with their exceptional musicianship and attention to detail. One of the quartet's most notable performances was their 2008 concert at the Wigmore Hall in London. The concert featured works by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and was met with critical acclaim. The quartet has also performed at other prestigious venues, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In addition to their performances, Quartetto Martesana has also received numerous awards and accolades. In 2007, they were awarded the prestigious Premio Abbiati, which is given annually by the Italian music critics' association to the best chamber ensemble in Italy. The quartet has also been praised for their recordings, which include works by Vivaldi, Bach, and Mozart. Despite their success, Quartetto Martesana remains committed to their craft and to bringing classical music to audiences around the world. They continue to perform regularly and to explore new works and interpretations of classical music. Their dedication to their art has made them one of the most respected and admired chamber ensembles in the world.
