She then went on to complete a Master of Music degree at the University of California, San Diego. During her time in the United States, she studied with some of the most renowned percussionists in the world, including Steven Schick and Aleck Karis. After completing her studies, Tomlinson returned to Australia and began performing with various ensembles and orchestras. She quickly gained a reputation as one of the country's most talented percussionists, known for her virtuosic playing and innovative approach to the instrument. One of Tomlinson's most notable performances was with the Australian Art Orchestra in 2004. The performance, titled "Sonic City," was a collaboration between the orchestra and a group of urban sound artists.
