Born in Taiwan, Chen began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Her parents recognized her potential and enrolled her in the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City when she was just nine years old. At Juilliard, Chen studied with some of the most respected piano teachers in the world, including Adele Marcus and Yoheved Kaplinsky. She also had the opportunity to perform in some of the school's most prestigious venues, such as Alice Tully Hall and the Juilliard Theater. Chen's talent and hard work paid off when she graduated from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1987. After graduating from Juilliard, Chen continued her studies at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where she earned a Master of Music degree. She then went on to study at the Paris Conservatory in France, where she honed her skills under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher Dominique Merlet. Chen's career as a professional pianist began to take off in the early 1990s, when she won several prestigious competitions, including the William Kapell International Piano Competition and the Artists International Auditions. These victories helped to establish her as one of the most promising young pianists of her generation. Chen's talent and hard work soon led to a busy schedule of performances around the world. She has performed with some of the most respected orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also given recitals in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. One of the highlights of Chen's career came in 1998, when she was invited to perform at the White House for President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. Chen's performance was widely praised, and she was later invited back to the White House to perform for President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. In 1995, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for the future.
