Karolos is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2010 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is named after Karolos Koun, a Greek theater director who was known for his innovative and experimental approach to theater. The founding members of Karolos were violinist Maria, cellist Dimitris, and pianist Kostas. They were all graduates of the Athens Conservatory and had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians in Greece and abroad. They were joined by violist Nikos, who completed the quartet. From the beginning, Karolos aimed to explore the rich repertoire of chamber music, from the classical period to contemporary works. They also sought to bring chamber music to a wider audience, by performing in unconventional venues and collaborating with other art forms, such as theater and dance. One of the highlights of Karolos' early career was their participation in the 2011 International Chamber Music Festival in Athens. They performed works by Mozart, Brahms, and Shostakovich, receiving critical acclaim for their technical precision and emotional depth. In 2012, Karolos embarked on their first international tour, performing in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. They were invited to perform at prestigious venues such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Konzerthaus, cementing their reputation as one of the most promising young ensembles in Europe. Over the years, Karolos has collaborated with many renowned musicians and artists, including the Greek National Opera, the Athens State Orchestra, and the choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou. They have also commissioned and premiered works by contemporary composers, such as Christos Hatzis and George Tsontakis. One of the most memorable performances by Karolos was their 2015 concert at the ancient theater of Epidaurus, one of the most iconic venues in Greece. They performed a program of works by Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert, accompanied by a stunning light show that enhanced the natural beauty of the theater. Karolos has also been recognized for their artistic achievements, receiving several awards and honors. In 2013, they were awarded the prestigious "Young Artists of the Year" award by the Greek Ministry of Culture. They were also selected as one of the "Rising Stars" of the European Concert Hall Organization in 2016, which led to a series of concerts in some of the most renowned concert halls in Europe. Today, Karolos continues to inspire audiences with their passionate and innovative approach to chamber music. They have released several recordings, including a critically acclaimed album of works by Schumann and Brahms. They also continue to collaborate with other artists and organizations, bringing chamber music to new audiences and pushing the boundaries of the art form.
