Joyce El-Khoury is a Canadian-Lebanese soprano who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born on October 18, 1980, in Lebanon, El-Khoury grew up in Ottawa, Canada, where she began her musical training at a young age. El-Khoury's parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began singing in choirs and taking voice lessons as a child, and by the time she was a teenager, she was already performing in local productions of musicals and operas. After completing her undergraduate degree in music at the University of Ottawa, El-Khoury went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. There, she honed her skills as a soprano and began to make a name for herself in the world of opera. El-Khoury's breakthrough performance came in 2010, when she was cast as Violetta in a production of Verdi's "La Traviata" at the Glyndebourne Festival in England. Her performance was widely praised by critics, who hailed her as a rising star in the world of opera. Since then, El-Khoury has gone on to perform in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and the Paris Opera. She has also won numerous awards for her performances, including the prestigious Richard Tucker Award in 2016. One of El-Khoury's most notable performances came in 2015, when she starred in a production of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" at the Royal Opera House. Her performance as Lucia was widely praised by critics, who hailed her as a "sensational" soprano with a "powerful and expressive" voice. El-Khoury has also made a name for herself as a champion of contemporary opera. In 2018, she starred in the world premiere of "Hadrian," an opera by Canadian composer Rufus Wainwright, at the Canadian Opera Company. Her performance as the Empress Plotina was widely praised by critics, who hailed her as a "powerful and nuanced" performer. In addition to her work as an opera singer, El-Khoury is also a passionate advocate for social justice. She has spoken out about issues such as gender inequality in the opera world and the need for greater diversity in classical music. Despite her many accomplishments, El-Khoury remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform in opera houses around the world, and she is widely regarded as one of the most talented sopranos of her generation.
