Ensemble Vortex is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in Geneva, Switzerland. The ensemble was founded in 1997 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for contemporary music and a desire to explore new sounds and techniques. The founding members of Ensemble Vortex were flutist Séverine Ballon, clarinetist Jérôme Combier, pianist Florent Jodelet, and percussionist Alexandre Babel. Over the years, the ensemble has expanded to include a rotating cast of musicians, including string players, vocalists, and electronic musicians. Ensemble Vortex has become known for its innovative programming, which often features works by living composers and lesser-known pieces from the contemporary classical repertoire. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including dancers, visual artists, and filmmakers. One of the highlights of Ensemble Vortex's early career was its participation in the 2000 Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music. The ensemble's performance of works by composers such as Helmut Lachenmann and Brian Ferneyhough received critical acclaim and helped to establish the group as a leading interpreter of contemporary music. In 2002, Ensemble Vortex released its debut album, "Vortex," which featured works by composers such as Luciano Berio, György Ligeti, and Salvatore Sciarrino.
