Kapok is a Dutch classical music ensemble that was founded in 2013. The group consists of three main members: Timon Koomen on guitar, Remco Menting on drums, and Rafael Van Der Velde on saxophone. The trio has gained recognition for their unique blend of jazz, classical, and world music, which they incorporate into their performances. Kapok's founding members, Koomen and Menting, met while studying at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. They began playing together in various jazz and rock bands before forming Kapok with Van Der Velde. The trio's name is derived from the kapok tree, which is known for its resilience and versatility. Since their formation, Kapok has released four albums, each showcasing their diverse musical influences. Their debut album, Kapok, was released in 2014 and received critical acclaim for its innovative sound. The album features a mix of original compositions and covers, including a rendition of Radiohead's "Paranoid Android." In 2016, Kapok released their second album, Glass to Sand, which was inspired by their travels to Morocco. The album features traditional Moroccan instruments, such as the guembri and the krakebs, and incorporates elements of Gnawa music into their sound. Glass to Sand was nominated for the Edison Jazz Award, one of the most prestigious music awards in the Netherlands. Kapok's third album, What Goes Up, was released in 2018 and features collaborations with various musicians, including Dutch singer-songwriter Benny Sings. The album showcases Kapok's versatility and ability to seamlessly blend different genres of music. In 2020, Kapok released their fourth album, Breathing in the Dark, which was recorded live in a church in Amsterdam. The album features a mix of original compositions and covers, including a rendition of David Bowie's "Heroes." Breathing in the Dark was nominated for the Edison Jazz Award and the Dutch Jazz Competition. Kapok has performed at various festivals and venues throughout Europe, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, and the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. They have also collaborated with other musicians, such as Dutch pianist and composer Martin Fondse. In addition to their musical performances, Kapok has also been involved in various educational projects. They have conducted workshops and masterclasses for students of all ages, teaching them about the different instruments and musical styles that they incorporate into their sound. Kapok's unique blend of jazz, classical, and world music has earned them critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.
