He was born as Jan Václav Stich in 1746 in the town of Žehušice, which was then a part of the Kingdom of Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. Punto was one of the most celebrated horn players of his time, and his compositions for the instrument are still widely performed today. Punto was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a horn player in the local church. He began his musical education at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in local orchestras. In 1763, he moved to Prague to study with the renowned horn player and composer Franz Xaver Pokorny. Punto quickly became one of Pokorny's star pupils, and he soon began performing in the court orchestra of Count Franz von Sporck. In 1772, Punto left Prague to join the court orchestra of Prince Elector Maximilian III Joseph in Munich. He quickly became one of the most sought-after horn players in the city, and he also began composing music for the instrument. Punto's compositions were highly regarded for their technical difficulty and their innovative use of the horn's capabilities. In 1781, Punto left Munich to join the court orchestra of Duke Karl Eugen of Württemberg in Stuttgart. He remained in Stuttgart for the rest of his life, and he became one of the most important figures in the city's musical scene. Punto continued to compose music for the horn, and he also began teaching the instrument to a new generation of players.
